You can no longer lodge the sponsorship, nomination, and visa applications concurrently.
2. Three Types of Occupational Training
Your proposed training must fall into one of three specific categories:
- Registration: Training required to get occupational registration or licensing to work in your profession.
- Skills Enhancement: Training to improve skills in an eligible occupation. You must have at least 12 months of full-time experience in this occupation within the last 24 months.
- Capacity Building Overseas: This includes up to 6 months of practical training for overseas students, or professional development programs for overseas employers sending their managerial staff.
3. A Highly Tailored Training Plan
The core of the 407 visa is the training plan. Your sponsor must provide a highly detailed, structured workplace-based training plan specifically tailored to your current skill level and training needs. It cannot be used simply to fill a standard employment vacancy.
4. Age, English, and Health
You must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate functional English to ensure you can safely navigate an Australian workplace. You are also required to maintain adequate health insurance (such as Overseas Visitor Health Cover) and meet Australia’s strict health and character requirements.
How to Apply for the Subclass 407 Training Visa

Please note: The 407 application is a rigid, three-step sequential process. Missing a step or lodging out of order under the 2026 rules will result in an invalid application.
Step 1: Secure an Approved Sponsor
Your employer must first apply to become an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor. This approval is valid for five years.
Step 2: Obtain Nomination Approval
The sponsor must submit a nomination application detailing the proposed training program. You must wait for this nomination to be fully approved before proceeding.
Step 3: Prepare Your Visa Application
While the nomination is processing, we assist you in gathering your identity documents, proof of functional English, health insurance records, and your 12 months of prior work or study experience (if applying under the skills enhancement stream).
Step 4: Lodge Your Final Visa Application
Once the nomination is approved, you have the green light to lodge your visa application via ImmiAccount. If you are in Australia, you must ensure you hold a valid substantive visa during the waiting period for the nomination, as a Bridging Visa is only issued once the actual 407 visa application is validly lodged.
Step 5: Visa Grant and Training Commencement
Once granted, you can begin your workplace-based training. The visa is granted for the specific length of your approved training program, up to a maximum of 2 years.
